In Rural Parts of the US, the Government Cares about Broadband

To help motivate the economy, the government is relying a number of programs, including The Broadband Initiatives Program (a/k/a Internet Recovery Act Program. The Internet Recovery Act Program was made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, and it is an opportunity for the following.

An opportunity for the rural broadband industry to create more jobs

Most rural areas in the US currently have access to satellite Internet because the broadband satellite Internet companies have already placed satellites in space. The government sees this as an opportunity, because extra funds are not needed to get the industry up and running.

While the infrastructure is there, some of the staff is not. With more rural broadband subscribers, the providers will need to hire new installers and customer support staff among others.

Rural broadband could lead to more business investment

The Internet Recovery Act will benefit more than satellite Internet industry. Regardless of location, businesses can now provide online services more efficiently.

The examples of this are limitless. Just look at farmers and ranchers who can jump online from their smartphones while in the field or local retailers who can rely on Internet-based point of sale systems. Examples such as these are proof that satellite Internet, which can be up to 30 times faster than dial up Internet access, will promote small business growth in rural areas, and that is good for the economy.

Encourage individuals to invest in rural broadband

Through the Internet Recovery Act Program the government has made $7.2 billion available. Thanks to these government funds, some rural residents in the western half of the United States will receive free satellites and modems for lease plus a satellite Internet connection at a reduced rate.

In order to take advantage of the discounted rates (the rate stays the same for as long as they subscribe), a subscriber must commit to 12 months of service. A long-term commitment is reassuring for satellite Internet companies who look forward to future business growth.
