Defining Satellite Broadband and Other Satellite Industry Terms

If you plan to use satellite Internet, then you need to understand all the terms that the satellite Internet industry uses.

Satellite broadband: Using a satellite dish, individuals and businesses can access the high-speed web at any time. Satellite Internet is always on and doesn’t require that a user “connect,” unlike dial up Internet.

Satellite Internet bandwidth: At any one time, how much information can be uploaded and downloaded to and from the Internet.

Broadband Initiatives Program: This is also referred to as the Internet Recovery Act Program and Broadband Recovery Act, and it is an effort of the U.S. Government to make sure rural areas have access to satellite broadband. It’s thought this will help stimulate the economy.

Fair Access Policy (FAP): Satellite Internet providers have a policy to limit uploading/downloading per household. The policy makes sure all subscribers have the same bandwidth.

Rural Internet service: DSL and cable Internet are not always available in rural areas, which is why many rural residents depend on dial up. In recent years, satellite Internet and wireless Internet have become more common choices for rural Internet service.

Satellite Internet dish: This small dish mounted on or near a building can receive and send information from an orbiting satellite. A modem, which is connected to the computer and the satellite dish, translates the microwaves into data that makes it possible to access the web.

Satellite Internet ISP: The acronym “ISP” means Internet service provider. Satellite Internet ISP is simply a company that offers Internet via satellite.

Southern Line of Sight: There are satellites in space (above the equator) that the terrestrial satellites must communicate with in order to get you online.

Wireless satellite Internet: If you have satellite Internet access, you can create a wireless network using a router.
