Two Methods To Test Your Internet Connection Speed

How do I test my Internet connection speed?  

It’s easy really.  But why should we test? 

How can you be sure that your ISP is really giving you the Internet connection speed they promised? Is there any way to tell? There is if you check your internet speed, and the good news is that the testing can be free. However, bear in mind that a good and accurate internet speed test should check both your download and upload speeds. 

There are 2 methods of testing your Internet connection speed:

1.   Manual:  You can accomplish this by downloading some software - the software can be free if you just need it for testing your Internet speed. Once download begins, look at the progress result box. This will tell you the size of the file, how much has been transfered, and how long it takes to download. In this way you will be able to test your Internet connection speed on your own.  But this method will not be as accurate as the following method.

2.   Through a third party:  Using an accurate, 3rd-party internet speed test is recommended.   These speed tests are programs hosted on a 3rd party’s server.  These speed tests record the time it takes for a file to completely download to, and upload from, your computer. Your connection download and upload time are accurately measured and then the speed test results are posted on the webpage.  The final results are shown in megabits per second - the standard measurement for internet connection speeds.

Don’t just take your ISP’s word for it, test your Internet connection speed for both uploads and downloads, preferrably using an accurate 3rd party internet speed test, and see just how fast your Internet connection really is.  It is simple to do and does not take long. Once you have a baseline knowlege of what your Internet connection speed is,  you will have a good idea if your current internet service will be adequate, or whether you need to spend more money to upgrade. 

And you shouldn’t stop there.  It’s adviseable to test your internet connection speed regularly - This way you can monitor not only the overall speed of your ISP, but also monitor any problems with your computer’s internet connection settings (browser, software, hardware) that may result in slower than normal internet connection speed.

In summary, it’s not only useful, but important to test your internet connection speed on a regular basis.  You should have an idea of how fast your connection generally is for monitoring your ISP and your computer.   It will greatly enhance your overall internet experience - especially if you enjoy internet activities like playing games and downloading files.  Knowing how fast your internet connection is and whether it will support your Internet activities is not only smart, but it assures that your online activities are productive and fun.
