How We Went From Dial-Up to Broadband Internet Connectivity

Once upon a time, about ten years ago, when the word internet hasn’t even been coined yet.  People communicated through post mails, telephone calls or pagers.  Mobile phones, although already being marketed, has not yet reached the mainstream market.

The internet revolution came as a welcome respite from all the troubles of looking for efficient ways to communicate with friends, family and colleagues who are away from you.  Dial-up was the widely-used internet connection mode at the time.

slow-speed, often hitting downtimes when downloading online and basically, needing your utmost patience; it nonetheless got the message across no matter the distance – at a much faster rate than snail mail.

With the growing clamor for a reliable and reliable online connectivity, Internet Service Providers have turned their product focus from dial-up internet to broadband technology.  These applications include DSL and Cable Modem.

The idea behind broadband internet is to provide customers the ease of being online with a higher speed rate compared to dial-up; and the free use of their telephone line simultaneous with being connected to the internet.

Dial-up internet require the use of the phone line solely for the internet at the time that you are connected to your dial-up modem.

This ultimately put dial-up connections in the backseat, with broadband now deemed as the most dependable internet connection thus far.  While ISPs have the tendency to get more users than their bandwidth can handle, the assumption that not all users will be logging on the internet simultaneously, their customers still get to fully utlize their share of bandwidth.

There are a lot of things to be got from having a broadband connection, instead of a dial-up internet access.  Other than the quicker download speed and the usually glitch-free online connectivity; having your phone line free for calls while connected to the internet is as good a benefit as any.

This is especially productive for small businesses where the use of both online connection and the telephone is very important.

As a whole, having broadband internet is beneficial to all users in that this is more reliable than dial-up – almost no down times, no hassles with downloads; and has better support for online applications.

Luckily broadband is much cheaper these days than it used to be. If you visit websites like Bredbaand, you will see that broadband internet now have the same price as dial-up internet used to have. In other words, nobody have any excuse for not having broadband at work and in their home.
