Mozilla Renews Deal With Google
In 2006 Google and Firefox made a deal which became the biggest income revenue stream for Mozilla, equating to almost 85% of its 2006 income.
Now an extended deal has been struck by Mozilla, Firefox browser makers, who until the beginning of September when Google launched it’s own web browser application called Chrome, were the only obvious competitor to IE, Internet Explorer. This extended deal will see Google being the default SE on all its Firefox installs until 2011.
The former CEO of Mozilla was adamant that they would walk away from the lucrative deal with Google should it compromise the independence of the company. They do not want to become another arm of the Google Empire. This is a little ironic as their revenue almost entirely comes from their business with Google.
Whatever way you look at it, it would appear as though Mozilla’s independence remains the same and Google rides on top of it’s competitors, Yahoo and Microsoft.
Internet Explorer is currently holding over 70% of the browser market but now it has Chrome to compete with its share, as well as Firefox.
In the latest version of IE, Microsoft are focusing on the area of privacy for it’s users, where as Firefox has had the upper hand in this. They have been offering their users a “clear private data” option but Microsoft plan to go beyond anything Mozilla are doing.
Firefox users are able to change their search engine preference once they install the browser, however human nature often sees the default browser remaining in place, indefinitely.
