I Understand The Internet Has Been In Existance For Forty Years. Happy Birthday!

Well, it’s now 4 decades since the internet was first in use. Who would have believed, in the beginning, how great it would end up in such a comparatively short period?

I recall, as a young child, thinking how fortunate were people such as Alexander Graham Bell, being able to invent the telephone. Others had invented radio, television, cinecamera. What was there left for such as my generation to invent? It is lucky others had more foresight than I did. We now benefit from mobile telephones, digital cameras, electronic games and many other fascinating items which I could not have even thought about as a youngster.

On the 40th anniversary of the internet, it is interesting to look at the differences we have encountered in the use of computers over this period. In the early days, there was no world wide web, so the internet was not the same as we think of today when we say we use it.

Not every business had access to computers forty years ago, never mind people having multiple PCs in their house. Even as recently as the 1990’s the business where I worked had only one computer which would connect to the internet and every member of staff had to use this in order to connect with the internet.
