Satellite Internet Cost and Internet Recovery Act Program Questions
In order to respond to the current economic crisis in the United States, the Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service has received funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These funds will go toward several investments including rural broadband by satellite.
While many rural residents know about the program, they still have many questions about the costs of satellite Internet. The following are commonly asked questions about the Internet Recovery Act Program.
How do I know if I’m eligible?
Not everyone can take advantage of rural broadband through the Internet Recovery Act Program. Only residents who live west of the Mississippi River and in a rural area may qualify. But this varies with your specific location. You’ll have to call a satellite Internet service provider to know for sure. Also, if you are already a satellite Internet user, then you won’t qualify.

What are the differences between typical service and the service I get under the Internet Recovery Act Program?
The service is the same - except for the cost. The Internet Recovery Act Program eliminates fees for installation, shipping and equipment leasing, and offers subscribers lower monthly fees as well.
Are the monthly fees fixed?
As long as you stay with the same service plan, the monthly satellite Internet cost will stay the same.
Do you need details about satellite Internet cost?
How do I get the equipment for rural broadband?
The satellite Internet provider sends you the equipment (minidish and modem) and leases it to you for free.
Do I have to sign a contract for my rural broadband Internet?
In order to qualify for the low satellite Internet costs, you will need to sign a 12-month contract. You also must maintain continuous service, without canceling, in order to keep your rate locked in. At that point you won’t be eligible for rural broadband under the Internet Recovery Act.
